How to turn a decimal into a fraction

    Count the decimal places

    0.375 has three, so the bottom of the fraction starts as 1000.

    Write it over that

    Drop the decimal point and put the digits on top: 375/1000.

  3. ÷

    Reduce

    Divide top and bottom by their greatest common factor, 125, to get 3/8.

Going the other way is just division: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. Some divisions never finish, like 1 ÷ 3, and the digits repeat forever.

How do you convert a decimal to a fraction?

Count the digits after the point, write the digits over 1 followed by that many zeros, then reduce. 0.375 has three decimals, so it is 375/1000, which reduces to 3/8.

What is 1/3 as a decimal?

0.333… The 3 repeats forever, which is usually written 0.3 with a bar over the 3. The calculator marks the repeating block in brackets, so 1/3 shows as 0.(3).

How do you turn a repeating decimal into a fraction?

Typing a rounded version like 0.3333333333 gives the exact fraction for the digits you typed, but the "simplest match" tile also offers the tidy fraction, 1/3, which is almost certainly what you wanted. Switch to fraction to decimal to check it.

What is a mixed number?

A whole number with a fraction beside it. 2.75 is 11/4 as an improper fraction, or 2 3/4 as a mixed number. Both mean the same amount.

Is 0.1 exactly 1/10 on a computer?

On paper, yes. Computers store decimals in binary, where 0.1 has no exact form, so tiny errors can appear in long chains of arithmetic. This calculator reads the digits you typed rather than the stored binary value, so 0.1 gives exactly 1/10.
