How to calculate a tip
Turn the percent into a decimal
18% is 0.18. Move the decimal point two places to the left.
Multiply by the bill
84.50 × 0.18 = 15.21. That is the tip.
Add and split
84.50 + 15.21 = 99.71 total. Four people: 99.71 ÷ 4 = 24.93 each.
Mental shortcut: 10% is the bill with the decimal moved one place. Double it for 20%, add half of it for 15%.
How much to tip
Restaurants (US)
15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard; 20%+ for great service. Check whether a service charge is already included for large groups.
Bars, delivery, taxis
$1–2 per drink or 15–20% of a tab. Delivery 15–20% with a few-dollar minimum. Taxis and rideshares 10–20%.
Elsewhere
Customs vary a lot. In Japan tipping can be awkward; in much of Europe rounding up or 5–10% is plenty. When in doubt, ask a local.
Questions people ask
How do you calculate a 20% tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.2, or move the decimal one place left and double it. On $84.50, 10% is $8.45, so 20% is $16.90.
Should I tip on the bill before or after tax?
Convention in the US is the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small; enter whichever amount you prefer.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. This calculator does both and also shows each person’s share of the tip on its own.
What if the service charge is already included?
Then a tip is usually optional. Set the tip percent to 0 and use the split to share the bill, or add a small extra if the service was exceptional.
Does the calculator handle rounding?
Yes. Choose exact cents, round the tip up to a whole dollar, or round the total up to a whole dollar. The per-person figures follow whichever you pick.
