How to add and subtract fractions

    Give them the same denominator

    To add 1/2 and 2/3, the smallest denominator both fit into is 6. So 1/2 becomes 3/6 and 2/3 becomes 4/6.

    Add the top numbers

    3/6 + 4/6 = 7/6. The denominator does not change — you are counting sixths.

  3. 3

    Reduce, and write it as a mixed number

    7/6 is already in lowest terms. As a mixed number it is 1 1/6.

Multiplying is easier: multiply the tops, multiply the bottoms, then reduce. To divide, flip the second fraction upside down and multiply.

What is 1/2 + 2/3?

7/6, which is 1 1/6 as a mixed number, or about 1.167 as a decimal. Give both fractions the denominator 6 — 3/6 + 4/6 — then add the top numbers.

How do you add fractions with different denominators?

Find a number both denominators divide into, rewrite each fraction with that denominator, then add the numerators and keep the denominator. Reduce at the end if you can.

How do you divide fractions?

Turn the second fraction upside down and multiply. So 1/2 ÷ 3/4 becomes 1/2 × 4/3 = 4/6 = 2/3.

How do I enter a mixed number like one and a half?

Type it with a space: 1 1/2. A hyphen works too (1-1/2). A minus sign in front applies to the whole value, so −1 1/2 means minus one and a half.

Why does this show a fraction when a calculator shows a decimal?

Most calculators convert to a decimal, so 1/2 + 2/3 comes back as 1.1666666. Homework usually wants the exact fraction — 7/6 — so that is the answer shown first here, with the decimal alongside.

What happens if I divide by zero?

Nothing is calculated. Dividing by zero has no answer, so the calculator says so instead of showing a number.

Can I use negative fractions?

Yes. Put the minus sign in front of the whole value: −3/4, or −1 1/2 for a negative mixed number.

Is a decimal like 0.75 allowed?

Yes. A finite decimal is converted to an exact fraction first, so 0.75 becomes 3/4 and the answer stays exact. To go the other way, use the decimal to fraction calculator.
