How your grade is calculated

  1. ×

    Score × weight

    Homework 92% worth 20, midterm 85% worth 30, project 78% worth 50: 1840, 2550, 3900.

  2. ÷

    Divide by total weight

    (1840 + 2550 + 3900) ÷ (20 + 30 + 50) = 8290 ÷ 100 = 82.9%.

  3. A

    Letter grade

    82.9% is a B on the common US scale (A 90+, B 80+, C 70+, D 60+). Your school's scale may differ.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate my grade average with weights?

Multiply each score by its weight, add those products, then divide by the sum of the weights. Homework 92 (weight 20), midterm 85 (30), project 78 (50): (92×20 + 85×30 + 78×50) ÷ 100 = 82.9.

What if my weights do not add up to 100?

That is fine. The calculator divides by whatever the weights total, so partial-semester weights still give the correct average of what you have so far.

How do I work out what I need on the final?

Needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final’s weight as a decimal. With an 84.3 current grade, a 90 target and a final worth 30%: (90 − 84.3 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 103.3. Over 100 means the target is out of reach without extra credit.

Can I enter points instead of percentages?

Convert each score to a percentage first (points earned ÷ points possible × 100), then enter it with its weight.

How do I calculate GPA?

GPA is a weighted average of grade points (A = 4, B = 3 and so on) weighted by credit hours. Enter each course’s grade points as the value and its credits as the weight in the weighted average calculator.
