How to find relative frequency
Count each value
In red, blue, red, green, red, blue: red appears 3 times, blue 2, green 1.
Divide by the total
There are 6 entries, so red is 3 ÷ 6 = 0.5, blue 2 ÷ 6 ≈ 0.333, green 1 ÷ 6 ≈ 0.167.
Turn it into a percentage
Multiply by 100: 50%, 33.3%, 16.7%. Every relative frequency adds up to 1, or 100%.
The cumulative column adds each row to the ones above it, so the last row always reaches the full total.
Questions people ask
What is relative frequency?
How often a value appears compared with the total number of entries: the count for that value divided by the total. It is written as a decimal between 0 and 1, or as a percentage.
What is the difference between frequency and relative frequency?
Frequency is the plain count: red appeared 3 times. Relative frequency puts that count in proportion: 3 out of 6 entries, so 0.5 or 50%. Relative frequency lets you compare data sets of different sizes.
Should relative frequencies add up to 1?
Yes. Every entry belongs to exactly one value, so the decimals sum to 1 and the percentages to 100%. Rounding can make a displayed column look like 99.9% or 100.1%.
What is cumulative relative frequency?
A running total down the table. Each row adds its own relative frequency to everything above it, so the final row reaches 1, or 100%. It answers questions like "what share of the values are 3 or below?". It only makes sense when the rows have a real order, so the cumulative columns appear for numbers and are hidden for words.
Can I use words instead of numbers?
Yes. Categories like colours, names or survey answers work the same way. Numbers are listed smallest first, which is the usual classroom layout; words are listed most common first.
