Time between
Leave the dates blank for the same day. If the end time is earlier than the start, we assume it is the next day.
How to calculate time between two times
Use the 24-hour clock
9:15 PM is 21:15. It avoids the AM/PM mix-ups that cause most mistakes.
Subtract hours and minutes separately
From 08:45 to 17:20: hours 17 − 8 = 9, minutes 20 − 45 = −25. Borrow an hour: 8 h 35 min.
Convert for timesheets
8 h 35 min = 8 + 35/60 = 8.58 hours. Minutes ÷ 60 gives the decimal part.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate hours worked between two times?
Subtract the start from the end using the 24-hour clock. 08:45 to 17:20 is 8 hours 35 minutes. Subtract any unpaid break, then convert to decimal hours (35 ÷ 60 = 0.58, so 8.58) for a timesheet.
What if the shift crosses midnight?
Enter the dates, or just leave them blank: if the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the end is on the next day.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes is 0.75 hours, 20 minutes is 0.33 hours.
Does it account for daylight saving time?
Yes, when you enter dates. The calculation uses your device’s clock settings, so a night when clocks change will show 23 or 25 hours as appropriate.
Can I add or subtract a duration from a time?
Not on this page yet. Enter the known time as the start and adjust the end until the duration matches.
