How the final grade formula works
Turn the weight into a share
A final worth 30% is 0.3 of your grade. Everything so far is the other 0.7.
Subtract what you already have
Target 90 minus current 84.3 × 0.7 (= 59.01) leaves 30.99 points the final has to supply.
Divide by the final's share
30.99 ÷ 0.3 = 103.3%. Over 100 means the target is out of reach without extra credit; aim for the best possible instead.
The formula: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final’s weight as a decimal. With a current grade of 84.3, a target of 90 and a final worth 30%: (90 − 84.3 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 103.3%.
What does it mean if I need more than 100%?
Your target is out of reach with a normal final. The calculator shows the best overall grade you can still finish with, which is what you get with a perfect score on the final.
What if I need 0% or less?
You have already locked in your target. Even a zero on the final would leave you at or above it.
Where do I find my current grade?
Most learning portals show it. If yours does not, add up your assignments with their weights in the grade average calculator.
Does this work if my final replaces a lower test score?
Not directly. That rule changes the weights depending on your scores. Ask your teacher how it is applied, then use the weighted average calculator with the adjusted weights.
